MOOC's or Massively Open On-line Courses are a new trend in higher education and learning today.  Their popularity has risen as the open source and creative commons worlds converged on an internet or world wide web of open collaboration and learning among all people.  This trend is expected to continue according to the New Media Consortium's recently released 5 year view at education and technology called the Horizon report on education.  This report is viewed by a panel of experts using a modified Delphi Method of inquiry that determines these trends and technologies by posing surveys to a panel of over 40 experts in various sciences, education, engineering, and technology fields from all over the world.

  1. Additional Notes from Doug: In my opinion, I feel that governmental forces in various places around the world may try to limit access to these great opportunities or at least limit woman and girls from enjoying this learning environment for themselves. Another factor that weighs heavily in these opportunities is funding. The Gates Foundation is helping some but other benefactors are needed to spread this around the world as a learning opportunity for all not just the wealthy or privileged.
